What Are Earth Circles? Print

Earth Circles are designed to help us move from feelings of despair and denial to positive action, using the power we gain from sharing concerns, learning together and acting in community. They are small groups of people who meet together to acknowledge their concerns and fears around climate change and the environmental, social, and economic destruction that may lie ahead, and to support one another in discovering and carrying out effective action, as we shift toward a more sustainable way of life.

Earth Circles are designed to take advantage of the power of mutual support and they have the potential to strengthen the social movement for climate action.  By providing a safe place in which to acknowledge our feelings about what is happening in the world, we can help each other take steps that will reverberate locally, regionally and globally.  Earth Circles can also help us foresee and cope with the dramatic changes that lie ahead.

In putting this workbook together, we have drawn on inspiration and guidance from our colleague and friend Joanna Macy, whose seminal work around despair and empowerment in the 1980s opened many to the power and necessity of approaching our work for the world from a place that honors and allows our deepest feelings of anger, fear, grief and despair.
