Getting to Know Where You Live |
|
|
|
PURPOSE: To understand your local resource management and the impact of climate change on your region. Length: 2.5 hours Opening Circle - 15 minutes
- One minute of silence
- Check-in
- Presentation by the facilitator of a relevantly-themed reading, video, or guided meditation
Homework Reports – 60 minutes Local and/or regional assessments were done in the following areas (teams of 2 or 3 members each):
- Water
- Waste
- Energy
- Transportation
- Food
Each team gives a brief report on what they found. It is also helpful for each team to provide a hard and electronic copy of their research findings so the group can begin to collect its own resources.
Presentation and broader discussion – 60 minutes If you invited a local expert to speak about current and potential local/regional impacts of global climate change, introduce him/her. Otherwise, the volunteers who signed up in Session One can present their research and lead the discussion.
Homework for Session FIVE – 5 minutes
- Write a page about a time when being in a community or part of a group made a significant difference in your life. Describe the qualities of the group that made it important for you. Share this page with your buddy, preferably by phone so that you can ask each other questions.
- Find some time in a quiet place where you can relax, read the Words of Wisdom from the Hopi Elders (see Resources section), and reflect on them. Consider the following questions:
- How do you respond to the poem? (notice your thoughts, feelings, physical responses)
- Does the sense of urgency in the poem speak to you of the times we are now living in? What in particular feels close to your experience of life these days?
- What signs of hope are offered?
Take notes. Then set a time to talk with your buddy to share thoughts with each other.
Closing Circle – 10 minutes
- Facilitator thanks everyone for participating.
- Ask everyone to come up with a word or phrase that describes something they experienced today that surprised them.
