What Are Earth Circles? Print

Earth Circles are designed to help us move from feelings of despair and denial to positive action, using the power we gain from sharing concerns, learning together and acting in community. They are small groups of people who meet together to acknowledge their concerns and fears around climate change and the environmental, social, and economic destruction that may lie ahead, and to support one another in discovering and carrying out effective action, as we shift toward a more sustainable way of life.

  • Do you listen to the news and worry about climate change?
  • Are you concerned about how your children's or grandchildren's lives will be affected by the threats to life on earth?
  • Are you having a hard time believing that things are as bad as scientists say?
  • Do you believe they are truly bad, but feel alone and helpless?
  • Do you find yourself brushing aside the doom-and-gloom, preferring to think about something more cheerful?

The Earth Circles workbook that you are beginning to read is organized around seven sessions. It can be used as is or altered to meet the needs of each circle.

Right now, in 2009, time is truly of the essence. Every person who cares about the future of life on Earth is needed to turn the tide. We invite you to gather with others to create an Earth Circle to help you move through feelings of helplessness, hopelessness, doubt and denial; feelings that may well be the biggest obstacle to our society taking in-depth action on climate change.
